E-TYPE Club News – September/October

E-type Club ROUND BRITAIN COASTAL DRIVE, supporting Prostate Cancer UK

  • 18-day event successfully concludes at Goodwood
  • Over 200 Jaguar E-types participated, with 70+ on final day
  • Fundraising target of £50,000 exceeded
  • Film now being edited
  • Event mastermind Philip Porter drives whole 4,000-mile route in Italian Job E-type
  • Almost certainly, the first time this has ever been done

‘I am elated, and relieved,’ says Philip Porter who had the original idea. ‘We were pioneers, even in 2016, and it was no small challenge. This, above all, was a team effort with fabulous support from my E-type Club colleagues who did all the hard work, our sponsors, our VIP Supporters, the charity, Prostate Cancer UK,  and over 200 E-type owners. ‘Everywhere we have gone, round the coast of Great Britain, we have been raising awareness direct with the public and through the media. And people have been amazingly generous. And we have had a lot of fun. Everyone wins. ‘We will certainly be doing it again next year.’

The weather was near perfect and the scenery, particularly in Scotland, was spectacular. Out of 150 hours of driving, Porter was only forced to raise the hood for just nine hours. Apart from the superb driving roads, other high spots included five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell flagging the cars away at the start, lunch at Dunbeath Castle, Mary Sayer, daughter of the legendary E-type designer Malcolm Sayer, joining for a day, a reception at the amazing J.D Classics premises and Ross Brawn, of F1 fame, taking part on the last day.

Porter is not only celebrating his recovery from prostate cancer but also the publication of his 30thbook, the first volume of his definitive biography of Sir Stirling Moss, which was launched at the Goodwood Revival meeting immediately prior to the start of the Round Britain Coastal Drive. ‘It is such a mammoth tome that a couple carried in the boot certainly kept the back end down!

‘This event was a wonderful way to see England, Wales and Scotland, sample places one has heard of but never been to, and discover so many quaint villages and stylish towns. Every day had its own character and special quality. Above all, there was a wonderful camaraderie as we all had a common cause and could use the fabulous E-type Jaguars, which we are lucky enough to own, for the good of men everywhere.’
